1. The Hills Have eyes: 2006 – Survival Horror
The film follows a family who are travelling to San Diego for their parents’ anniversary. But while taking a shortcut through some rocky hills, their car is vandalized and they are left in the middle of nowhere. It is soon revealed that they are under attack by a group of savage mutants who were created in a research facility in that very desert.
Although the film received mixed reception, ‘The Hills have Eyes’ is a very interesting film which can show how far some people will go to survive. And I find that a portion of the plot can be relatable to my group’s horror film idea since it involves people who have been genetically modified to become mutants.
2. In the Flesh: 2013 BBC Series – Supernatural Drama A critically acclaimed television series, In the Flesh is set during the aftermath of an apocalyptic event in which the dead rose from their graves and began to eat the living. After a cure was developed and allowed the zombies or “Rotters” to return to normal, they are sent back to their homes to be with their families. However, upon arriving home they are subjected to cruel mocking, prejudice and most importantly religious backlash. This very relatable to our film idea since it focuses on religious beliefs and people being returned to their families after a very horrific event e.g. the subjects murdering their captors. It also focuses on morals and how people you once considered friends can become enemies. This is relatable to how the parents of the subjects would react to having their children returned to them after years of waiting.
3. The Island: 2005 - Sci-Fi/Action Thriller A high budget film with very famous cast of Hollywood actors directed by Michael bay the man behind films like transformers. This film featuring Scarlett Johanson and Ewan McGregor is set in the future when scientist have found a way of harvesting perfect replicas of humans a “perfect” human that will be healthy so if something happens to the original host like a car crash or fatal illness the clone can be killed and used to save his life, but the experiments are being treated like animals living a prison like life of the same routine until one day two of the experiments don’t take their medication and the experimentation backfires as the clones escape and after lots of confusion try to make a life for them self. But this leads to hard questions on the future of morals and human rights, leaving the audience to think about if harvesting humans cruelly and inhumanely is wrong and will it actually happen in the future.
4. Early Gothic Horror: Frankenstein and the Addams family Similarities of the set, architecture settings and inspiration with characters villains, Angels, Fallen Angels, demons supernatural darkness and secrets all fit in with the Gothic fiction genre We think that the film the Addams Family Values is similar to the idea of abnormality and people being different from the crowed and the Addams family are shown as Gothic living in an abandoned not looked after house.
